Overview
The Apple Siri Remote (3rd generation) is Apple's rechargeable remote for Apple TV, combining physical playback buttons with a touch-enabled circular clickpad. Its aluminum body, dedicated power and mute buttons, and side-mounted Siri button distinguish it from the older black, glass-topped Siri Remote. This generation uses USB-C charging rather than Lightning, but its everyday controls closely resemble those of the second-generation model. It is a replacement or upgrade accessory, not a streaming device, and it does not add Apple TV functionality to a television by itself.
Review coverage of the aluminum redesign generally favors its clearer button layout and more deliberate navigation compared with the original touch-focused remote. You can click through menus, swipe across the clickpad, or use its outer ring to scrub through supported video playback. That flexibility is useful, although touch gestures still divide users and app behavior is not completely uniform. For price comparisons, the important distinction is between this USB-C model, the similar Lightning version, and inexpensive third-party remotes that omit Siri or touch input.
Who it's for
This remote makes the most sense for someone replacing a lost or damaged Apple TV remote, or upgrading from the older black Siri Remote. It supports Apple TV HD and every generation of Apple TV 4K, so buying a newer streaming box is not necessary just to gain its controls. Households that regularly use voice search, dictate text, or prefer Apple's native navigation will get more from it than buyers who only need directional buttons and basic playback.
It is a less compelling purchase if your existing aluminum Siri Remote works properly. Moving from the second generation mainly changes the charging connector, rather than the navigation experience. A compatible television remote using HDMI-CEC, or the Apple TV Remote in an iPhone's Control Center, may already cover your immediate needs. Conversely, a dedicated physical remote remains convenient for guests and anyone who does not want to unlock a phone to control television viewing.
Things to know before buying
Check the connector and generation in the listing, especially when comparing discounted stock. A USB-C charging cable is sold separately. The remote communicates with Apple TV over Bluetooth and includes infrared for supported equipment controls; television power and volume behavior depends on your television, receiver, soundbar, and HDMI-CEC or infrared configuration. Do not assume every home theater setup will respond identically without configuration.
An Apple TV pairs with one Siri Remote at a time, so a second purchase is not a simultaneous second controller. Compatible iPhones and sufficiently recent software can help locate second- and third-generation Siri Remotes, but this is not equivalent to an AirTag with a built-in speaker. Finally, the third-generation remote lacks the motion sensors found in the original Siri Remote, which matters for older games that relied on them.
