Overview
The Garmin Venu Sq is the original square-faced, entry-level watch in Garmin’s Venu family. It combines built-in GPS, wrist-based heart-rate tracking and everyday wellness features with a relatively small, lightweight case. Unlike the round Venu and the later Venu Sq 2, this model uses a color LCD rather than an AMOLED display. A touchscreen and two side buttons handle navigation. Its appeal is practical: activity tracking, phone notifications and several days between charges, rather than a large selection of smartwatch apps.
Daily tracking includes steps, sleep, stress and Garmin’s Body Battery estimate, which uses activity and recovery signals to suggest how your energy reserves change. Supported sports include running, cycling, swimming and gym workouts. Built-in GPS lets you record outdoor routes without carrying your phone, and Garmin Connect provides a detailed place to review your activity afterward. Garmin rated battery life at up to six days in smartwatch mode or up to 14 hours using GPS; actual results depend on settings, usage and the condition of the battery.
Who it's for
The Venu Sq suits someone who wants a straightforward fitness watch with more exercise detail than a basic step tracker. It is particularly useful for casual runners, walkers and gym users who want phone-free route recording without moving into a larger, more training-focused Garmin. It works with both Android phones and iPhones, although some connected features differ by platform. Its lightweight build also makes it a reasonable option for wearing overnight, provided you find the strap comfortable.
It is less suitable for shoppers who prioritize a bright, modern display, voice calls or a rich app ecosystem. Serious runners may prefer a Forerunner for physical controls and training tools. The standard Venu Sq is also not the version to choose for phone-free music: that requires the separate Music Edition. As an older model, it makes most sense when its price is meaningfully below newer alternatives, not simply because a listing shows a large discount from its original retail price.
Things to know before buying
Check the exact model and condition before comparing offers. Venu Sq, Venu Sq Music Edition and Venu Sq 2 are different products, and marketplace listings can mix their photographs or specifications. New stock of the original model may be limited. Confirm the seller’s return policy, US warranty eligibility and whether the charging cable is included. Even an unused older watch can have some battery aging from storage.
Garmin Pay depends on support from your bank and card issuer. There is no microphone or speaker for wrist-based calls, and the watch lacks a barometric altimeter for counting floors climbed. Health estimates are useful for spotting trends, not diagnosing conditions. Finally, compare the total price against newer Garmin, Fitbit and Amazfit watches: a modest saving may not justify the older screen, shorter remaining support horizon and uncertainty around stored inventory.
